This week I had an amazing consulting session with the fabulous ChicExecs Brand Strategy Firm and it was so great to finally put faces to names and talk about pitching, trends, and issues affecting the media industry today. One topic that came up several times was the notable pivot away from commerce-driven stories, a change driven by Google’s 2024 algorithm shifts (which I discuss in detail here with an SEO expert) that’s sending shock waves through media.

If you’ve noticed it’s harder to get product placement in stories it’s not that you’ve suddenly lost your PR mojo. These shifts have directly affected outlets, on-staff writers, PR professionals, and freelancers like myself. I’ve received directives to not include commerce in certain pieces because Google de-prioritizes it and I’m receiving fewer commerce assignments in general; you’ll find that the bulk of commerce stories are now created by in-house writers (and at a reduced frequency).

(Psst. Did you miss my latest posts? Here are a few I’ve recently published: Journalist Inbox Horror Stories: What *Not* to Do When Emailing Editors + Why I Trust Certain PR People More Than Others + 7 Reasons Your Client Wasn’t Included in the Story!)
